5 Everyday Foods You Didn’t Realize Are High in Carbs

When most people think of carbs, bread, pasta, and rice usually come to mind. But plenty of everyday foods carry a surprisingly high carb load. If you’re watching your carb intake, here are five common foods worth a closer look.

1. Tortillas
That soft flour tortilla holding your burrito or wrap may look thin, but it can pack the carb equivalent of three to four slices of bread. Even whole wheat versions aren’t much lower—they’re still mostly starch. Swapping for a smaller tortilla or using lettuce wraps can help cut back without giving up your favorite meals.

2. Flavored Yogurt
Yogurt has a healthy reputation, but many flavored varieties are closer to dessert than breakfast. A single cup can carry 20–30 grams of sugar, often more than ice cream. If you like yogurt, plain Greek yogurt topped with fresh berries is a much lower-carb option.

3. Fruit Juices and Smoothies
Even 100% fruit juice is concentrated sugar. One glass of orange juice has as many carbs as several whole oranges—without the filling fiber. Smoothies can be even trickier, especially when they include sweetened yogurt, honey, or multiple servings of fruit.

4. Sauces and Condiments
Ketchup, barbecue sauce, sweet chili sauce, and even some salad dressings hide more sugar than you’d expect. Just a couple tablespoons can add 10–15 grams of carbs. Reading labels or choosing low-sugar versions can make a big difference over time.

5. Beans and Lentils
They’re packed with fiber, protein, and nutrients, but beans and lentils are still high in starch. A single cup of cooked lentils has around 40 grams of carbs. They can absolutely fit into a balanced diet, but portion size matters if you’re aiming for low-carb.

The Bottom Line
Carbs aren’t always obvious, and foods that look light or “healthy” can add up quickly. You don’t necessarily have to cut these foods out altogether, but being aware of where carbs hide helps you make choices that align with your goals. A little label-reading and portion awareness goes a long way
